CrossFit is Life?

CrossFit is hard. So is life. There is a huge connection to what happens to me in and outside of the gym. How I think about a workout, visualize it, approach it, complete it, and think about it after has a correlation to how I approach life.

1: Analyze the WOD (CrossFit talk for the workout of the day): I think about all of the possible ways to approach a workout so that I can be efficient and effective all at once. I want to produce the best results.

Life is like that for me. Before I do anything I am analyzing. I always want to get the most out of everything. It can be a trip, a gathering, or work that needs to be done. Visualizing things is the first step to making it happen.

2: Approach the WOD: My mental state has to be there as I approach the WOD. We all have bad days and I am no different, but when I approach a workout I try to keep a positive mentality. I don’t think about failing, I don’t think about the work I didn’t finish, I’m also not thinking about the argument I had with my wife or family. I have to stay focused and positive.

I tell members to get out of their own way. If you are the one talking yourself out of a workout you’ll most certainly fail. The same is true for life. You can set yourself up for failure or success. You should be your biggest fan.¬†

3: Complete the WOD: By now I have chosen the best approach, but there will be variables. I have to be able to go with the flow and change my game plan during the WOD.

Life is like that. We can plan and prepare, but we need to be able to go with the flow, we also need to be able to be intuitive when we have to think on the fly.

4: Post Workout: It’s shake time, but it is also a time to reflect. First, the question is did I die? No? Well, then could I have held on to the bar for more reps or gone faster? Maybe I could have rested less. I’ll work to not make that mistake again. What worked best? I’ll definitely do that again.

Every experience in life is an opportunity to learn and grow. Always be a student.
