What is CrossFit?

It can be difficult to put CrossFit into words as there is nothing to compare it to. The best way to try to understand it is to give it a try. For those who are reluctant to try here is a brief overview of its definition and the fitness program.

Definition:
Constantly varied, functional movements, performed at high intensity.

Constantly Varied:
Every class you come to will be different. You will never experience the same session or workout. The purpose of this is to avoid the normal boring routine. The goal is to keep you on your toes and change up the workout so you experience every element of fitness. We alter the time, amount of repetitions, amount of weight, equipment, exercise modality, and so much more.

Functional Movements:
Functional meaning transferrable into everyday life. If an exercise has a purpose then it’s considered functional. Our purpose is to mimic movements that are required in the real world. For example, you sit down and stand up every day so naturally we squat often in CrossFit. We use basic gymnastic skills, weightlifting, powerlifting, and endurance exercises. In CrossFit you will use your whole body to its full capacity through different training modalities. This can be very difficult but will elicit maximal metabolic response producing maximal results. In other words the work is hard and it will pay off.

Workout of the Day:
The workout out of the day is constantly varied functional movements or the program. The program is something you never have to think about. Your coaches program the workout for you. When we say varied we don’t mean random. There is a method to the madness with special consideration of the goal of CrossFit. The goal of CrossFit is to increase an individual’s work capacity against broad time and modal domains using a fitness program that is broad, general, and inclusive. In other words we lay down the foundation of general fitness necessary for any individual whether you are looking to get into shape or interested in getting better for sport. We develop athletes and being athletic is important whether you play a sport or not. Again, you don’t have to worry about the program. You can just show up and do what we say and experience the results. If you’d like to know more about how we program look out for future blog posts or just ask a coach.

High Intensity:
Intensity is where you come in. As said before, hard work will pay off. If you put forth the effort you will achieve your goals. It’s not enough to know what to do, you actually have to do it. Most people know that eating vegetables can be beneficial but they don’t take the next step which is to eat vegetables and not a bag of chips. There are no short cuts either. You have to eat vegetables not veggie chips! In relation to exercise, you have to squat and will see better results by doing full squats rather than half squats. You have to do the work and put forth “appropriate effort.”

Intensity is relative which is why I say “appropriate effort.” For a beginner 3-4 days per week of low volume and 70% effort can seem like a lot and may be an appropriate amount of intensity for the individual. If a beginner does 7 days a week with a lot of volume at 100% effort, that’s a recipe for disaster. That’s why most people fail because they do too much at first and crash and burn. Finding an intensity level that is appropriate for you can be difficult which is why we have coaches in each class to guide you and find a suitable workout of the day for you. An appropriate intensity level is slightly past a level of discomfort. At this level things may seem difficult and or impossible. It is not easy to self motivate which is why we have our coaches here to push you past your limits with special consideration of your wellbeing. We will never put you in a position that’s dangerous or unsafe. Intensity yields results so give a solid effort and stick to the plan and you will achieve your fitness goals.
